In an unusual move, an 85-attorney Chicago firm has created an advisory board to help direct its management committee.

Much Shelist Denenberg Ament & Rubenstein created the board, whose members met for the first time last week and will each receive $1,250 per meeting in compensation, to act much as a board of directors does, reports the National Law Journal in an article reprinted in New York Lawyer (reg. req.).

The five “thought leaders” with diverse perspectives and experience who serve on the board are expected to provide input on “a broad range of issues that impact legal services,” the firm says in a press release.

The members of the advisory board include the general counsel for the company that produces Oprah Winfrey’s television talk show, two business consultants, a retired law firm partner and the executive director of a local bar association, as the press release details.

“It’s a good time to get some other ideas and perspectives,” David Brown, the firm’s longtime management committee chair tells the legal publication. “You can’t just get them on the management committee.”
