Munger, Tolles & Olson heads the list of “A-List” firms for the third year in a row.

The 2010 A-List, released Thursday, is American Lawyer magazine’s eighth annual attempt to measure what it says are the 20 most successful law firms. See the full list.

Munger Tolles bested this elite bunch, the magazine says, by combining a near-perfect diversity score with strong showings in revenue per lawyer, pro bono commitment and associate satisfaction. The ranking comes from scores in those four categories, with scores for revenue per lawyer and pro bono committment counting double.

The Los Angeles-based firm came out on top for the third year running with a total score of 1,127, dropping only two points from its 2009 A-List total, according to the magazine.

However, much of the list was rife with movement, the magazine says. Four firms fell off the list altogether; four joined it, and six of the 13 firms that moved up or down from 2009’s list did so by six or more places.

Rounding out the top five firms were New York’s Hughes, Hubbard & Reed; Debevoise & Plimpton; Davis, Polk & Wardwell; and WilmerHale.
