A defense lawyer who moonlights as a screenwriter was among the recent attendees at a Los Angeles workshop hosted by the Muslim Public Affairs Council.

Intended to encourage the realistic portrayal of Muslims onscreen in a wide range of characterizations, rather than simply as stereotypical bad-guy terrorists, the series seeks to help those interested in such portrayals market their work, reports the Associated Press.

“The idea is to really give Muslims an avenue to tell our stories. It’s as simple as that. There’s a curiosity about Islam and a curiosity about who Muslims are—and a lot of the fear that we’re seeing comes from only hearing one story or these constant negative stories,” explains Deana Nassar, an entertainment lawyer who serves as the group’s liaison to Hollywood.
