NY Animal Lovers Can Once Again Be Buried with Pets, Thanks to Lawyer's Effort
Pet cemeteries in New York may once again accept human ashes because of a New York lawyer’s effort to honor the wishes of her deceased uncle.
The state’s Division of Cemeteries has issued new regulations allowing the practice after a campaign by lawyer Taylor York, a criminal justice professor at Keuka College, the Associated Press reports.
York’s late uncle wanted to be buried next to his wife and their two dogs. According to the AP story, pet cemeteries may accept human ashes if they do not advertise the service, don’t charge a fee, and warn their human customers they would be giving up protections, such as restrictions on removal.
New York stopped human burials at pet cemeteries earlier this year after AP reported the practice is gaining in popularity.
