NAACP calls for Justice Department to probe 'harassment' by city's police department
On the heels of a Miami Herald report on alleged police harassment of black patrons and employees and of a convenience store in suburban Miami Gardens, the NAACP has asked the U.S. Justice Department to investigate. The population of Miami Gardens is predominantly black.
The Miami Herald’s latest report on that development includes nine videos of the alleged police harassment at the 207 Quickstop. The convenience store’s owner installed cameras after he tired of his customers and employees being accosted by police. One man, as both a patron and employee of store, has been stopped by police 258 times in four years.
The arrests of that employee, Earl Sampson, usually were for trespassing where he works.
Sampson and nine others have filed a lawsuit against the city and police department in federal court, the Herald reports.
