North Carolina’s chief justice has indefinitely suspended a Mecklenburg County judge without giving a reason why.

The judge, John Totten, was elected in 2008 and has been on medical leave since October, returning to court occasionally, the Charlotte Observer reports.

Supreme Court Chief Justice Sarah Parker didn’t explain the reason for the suspension, the story says. The executive director of the state Judicial Standards Commission, Paul Ross, was also tight-lipped, refusing to say whether a complaint had been filed against Totten.

Unnamed sources told the newspaper of allegations that the judge made inappropriate comments to court personnel, and said the claims were submitted to the standards commission.

The Associated Press sought a comment by calling a number listed in Totten’s name, but did not get a response. He did not return the Observer’s phone calls.
