One of the oldest law firms in Charlotte, N.C., announced yesterday that it is laying off 13 attorneys and another 15 staff members to cope with a difficult economy.

The cuts by Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein were made across the 480-attorney firm’s six offices in the Carolinas, reports the Charlotte Observer.

“The layoffs included 13 lawyers, four paralegals and 11 other staffers in various practice areas. Two of the lawyers who were let go worked in the firm’s Raleigh office,” reports the Triangle Business Journal, attributing the information to law firm spokesman Kevin Kelly.

“For law firms to succeed in the coming year, they must realign personnel with their clients’ changing needs and operate as efficiently as possible,” managing partner Bill Farthing says in a written statement.

Laid-off lawyers will get a severance package and will be paid any earned 2008 bonus, the business journal states.
