Nearly 4 million patients of 11 health care providers in multiple states were affected by a hack attack earlier this year on Medical Informatics Engineering.

The Indiana-based company creates software for Internet-based medical records systems used by health care providers, the Associated Press explained when the intrusion was announced in June. It wasn’t until Monday, however, that the number of people affected—3.9 million—was made public by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Associated Press reported.

Affected individuals are being offered free credit monitoring and identity protection. But Indiana’s attorney general, Greg Zoeller, suggests state residents simply freeze their credit records while his office investigates the hack.

Meanwhile, a lawsuit was filed Monday in federal court in Fort Wayne, the Journal Gazette reports. It alleges that MIE’s security measures were lacking and contends the company did not provide timely notice of the hack to consumers.
