Thousands of Nevadans got a 1 a.m. phone call from retired Justice Sandra Day O’Connor on Monday.

The recorded O’Connor call urged voters to support a referendum for merit selection of judges, but the unintended effect may have been to turn some voters against the measure. The Las Vegas Review-Journal and MyNews3.com have stories.

New robocalls placed during daytime hours on Monday apologized for the error, caused when the message was programmed for 1 a.m. instead of 1 p.m., the Review-Journal says. The robocall company has since been fired.

The referendum, which is trailing in the polls, called for merit selection of judges with retention elections after judges are appointed to the bench.
