Business is reportedly brisk at private detective agencies in Britain that are offering a popular new service. For those who doubt a spouse’s adherence to his or her marriage vows, an attractive private detective can be hired to test the loved one’s loyalty by flirting with the suspect in public settings.

Such “honey trapping” by one private detective agency allegedly has determined that four out of five targets were ready to cheat on their marriage, reports Reuters. The entire encounter with the PD is routinely videotaped, so the customer who contracted with the agency for the “hit” can see exactly what happened.

Richard Martinez, who runs a detective agency that conducts such surveillances, described the rules of engagement: “The target must not be drunk, there must be no touching, and the relative attractiveness of the trapper to the target must be equal,” as the news agency puts it.

Even when the encounter shows a loved one is ready for a fling, he contends, the technique doesn’t necessarily lead to divorce. Instead, after such monitoring is revealed, a customer can use it to help keep a spouse from cheating by pointing out that any future encounter might involve a videotaped PD, too.
