The new U.S. Attorney in Milwaukee has seen the investigative power of the United States from both sides.

At a ceremony for his investiture, U.S. Attorney James Santelle revealed that he was under criminal and ethical investigation for 10 months in 2008, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Santelle had inadvertently included classified documents in a box of legal papers he shipped to the United States from Iraq, where he was serving as a legal adviser to judges and other officials, the story says. The Justice Department closed both the ethics and criminal probes without taking action, acknowledging that the classified documents were included because of a mistake.

“Because of the events of 2008, I believe I understand better the investigative power we have and the importance of getting it right,” Santelle said.

Santelle was sworn in as U.S. attorney in January. He has 25 years of prosecution experience.
