Updated: Amid reports that evidence-gathering has never been easier than in the Internet age comes word of a new Android application, the Secret SMS Replicator.

It could be installed on any Android cellphone to permit secret forwarding of text messages to any other cellphone, the Bits blog of the New York Times reports.

“This app is certainly controversial, but can be helpful to people in relationships where this type of monitoring can be useful,” says Zak Tanjeloff in a press release. He is chief executive of DLP Mobile, which created the application.

The Times article doesn’t address the legality of forwarding texts without the user’s knowledge. But later on Wednesday, the Times learned that following the controversy, Google suspended the app because it “violates the Android Market Content Policy.”
