A high-profile trial lawyer in Mississippi is alive today thanks to a new parachute system he installed on his private plane.

John Farese, 67, of the Farese, Farese & Farese Law Firm, escaped with minor injuries after the engine quit on his Cessna 182, report the Memphis Commercial Appeal, the Hattiesburg American and WREG.com.

The new parachute system, thought to cost around $20,000, slowed the plane’s descent before it crashed, authorities said. Farese’s brother, Steve Farese, said the system was installed only a few days before. “There is no question that the parachute saved his life,” he told the Commercial Appeal.
