Police in Washington state will be abandoning paper traffic tickets, the Seattle Times reports.

Police will use a handheld device to scan bar codes on driver’s licenses and vehicle registrations. The information will be transferred to the courts electronically.

Other states that have gone paperless include Ohio and California, the newspaper says.
