No Free Lunch: Bank Sued re Sandwiches
The state of Ohio has filed a lawsuit against Citibank contending that a free sandwich offer was deceptive.
Because this and at least one other offer promising free food to college students who showed an ID made no mention of the fact that they would also have to apply for a credit card before they could chow down, the offers violated the Ohio Consumer Sales Practices Act, the state attorney general contends in two recent lawsuits.
One was filed against the bank and Potbelly Sandwich Works over a “free” sandwich offer, according to the state attorney general’s Web site. The other lawsuit names defendants allegedly involved in a “free burrito” promotion, according to the complaint and the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
“Most people have heard stories of college students getting into trouble with credit card debt,” the newspaper writes in an editorial today. “Was Citibank out to lunch?”
