No Layoffs at Major Law Firms Last Week, But Are Doldrums Ending?

No news is good news for associates at large law firms.

For the first time this year, a week passed without a report of any layoffs at large law firms. Law Shucks reported the news in a blog post that began with just one word: “Hallelujah!”

Layoffs slowed in June, and remained that way throughout the summer. But Law Shucks suggests the summer doldrums may be ending.

“Summer is likely a slow time for law-firm layoffs due to factors other than economic conditions,” the blog says, in a post also appearing on Above the Law. “Partners are on vacation, summer associates are patrolling the halls looking for work, and the class of 2009 offerees have been studying for the bar.

“Put another way: there was no one around to make the decision; no one wanted to emotionally scar next year’s crop of fresh blood; and common decency says wait until the incoming wave is through the stress of the bar.”

I don’t believe the pessimist quoted here. If it means saving money, partners can come back from vacation, or worse yet, by remote control, lay off people.  I think, as with the rest of the economy, we have turned a corner, thanks to President Obama’s economic policy.

Thanks to something, at any rate.  I doubt “common decency” was a factor.

Besides, the firms might be required to reimburse the kids for their unused vacation time, better to lay ‘em off after they have burned thru their vacation. Besides it sends a chilling message on those left behind - see what happens when you are so impudent as to actually take your vacation!
