Another attempt by San Francisco-based Heller Ehrman to find a marriage partner has concluded without wedding bells.

Citing client and practice conflicts, Chicago-based Mayer Brown said in an e-mail today that merger talks with the firm are at an end, reports the American Lawyer.

"Heller is a fine firm with outstanding lawyers," says Mayer Brown in the e-mail. "Like us, they have a long heritage of excellence in their work and service to clients. A merger with them would have offered potential benefits for both firms and our clients."

Heller Ehrman didn't return phone calls, a Lawyer article says.

Earlier this year, before talking with Mayer Brown, Heller Ehrman had been discussing a possible merger with the Baker & McKenzie international megafirm.

Why does Heller Ehrman keep looking for a partner?  Are they going under and losing too many clients/partners etc?
