Norway Embarks on First Genocide Trial, Rwandan Man Pleads Not Guilty
A Rwandan man is facing trial in Norway on charges he participated in the 1994 genocide in his home country.
Sadi Bugingo, who traveled to Norway in 2001 to join family, has pleaded not guilty, the Associated Press reports.
But authorities maintain he took part in the killings of 2,000 ethnic Tutsis in eastern Rwanda.
An earlier story by Sapa-AFP quotes Oslo prosecutor Petter Mandt, who notes the trial is a first for Norway and unusual.
He told the publication that the country wanted a public trial so that people would know Norway isn’t a refuge for criminals.
Hearings are expected to last several months, with a verdict in 2013.
