For some reason, Andre Antonio Henry was carrying a two-page copy of theft charges filed against him in Washington, D.C., when police say he committed an office burglary in the metropolitan area.

The document, which contained his full name, apparently fell out of his pocket at the Office of the Federal Coordinator for Meteorological Services and Supporting Research, authorities say. They used it not only to identify Henry as a suspect in a burglary there but to win a judge’s approval for a search of Henry’s home. There they found evidence linking him to other crimes, according to the Silver Spring, Md., Patch and the Washington Post (sub. req.).

Henry, suspected in dozens of office break-ins around the metropolitan area and indicted in eight, pleaded guilty last month to second-degree burglary in three cases. A Montgomery County, Md., judge gave him 18 years on Wednesday during a Rockville sentencing hearing. He was already on probation in a burglary case in Northern Virginia, the Post notes.

Henry apologized in court and said he is truly sorry about his crimes. “It’s sad that it took all this time for me to really open my eyes and see how important my freedom is,” he told the judge.
