Manhattan environmental lawyer Mayur Subbarao is among a growing contingent of coctktail connoisseurs who have made mixed drinks a near obsession.

Subbarao readily admits he is “cocktail geek,” the New York Times reports. He makes his own vermouth and his own block ice for his at-home concoctions. Sometimes he travels to a friend’s house to obtain even better ice from a Kold-Draft machine. He also frequents bars that cater to those of his ilk, establishments with “whopping arrays of bitters” but little in the way of vodka, the story says.

“The cocktail geek scene is essentially a gastronomic scene, an outgrowth of food and wine culture,” Subbarao told the Times. “These people are foodies at heart.”

Cocktail blogger Paul Clarke explained how the obsession can take hold. “It all starts with an innocent experimentation with pomegranate juice, trying to make a passable grenadine,” Clarke told the newspaper. “The next thing you know, your refrigerator is full of homemade pineapple and raspberry syrups, gomme syrup, made with gum arabic to give it an extra-luscious mouth-feel.”

A LinkedIn profile identifies Subbarao as an owner of an energy consulting firm called the Sustainable Profitability Group and a 1999 graduate of New York University law school. An online profile of the company says Subbarao was a former associate at the appropriately named Beveridge & Diamond.
