Obama presses military leaders to deal with sexual assaults
President Obama is giving military leaders one year to show they are adequately dealing with sexual assaults in the armed forces, the Associated Press reports.
If they cannot show progress, the president said he will consider reforms to “eliminate this crime from our military ranks.”
Various approaches to this are under consideration in Congress—including legislation that would strip commanding officers, who are often nonlawyers, of their authority in investigating and prosecuting sexual assaults—and the issue has vexed the military as more women have been brought into the ranks while not having their complaints heard, the ABA Journal detailed in a recent feature.
