President Barack Obama supports a bill that would amend the Civil Rights Act to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identify, according to White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest.

In remarks to reporters Tuesday, Earnest said the White House has reviewed the Equality Act and is strongly supporting the legislation, the Washington Post reports. He added that the administration would work to ensure the final bill balances “the bedrock principles of civil rights with the religious liberty that we hold dear in this country.”

The Post says the bill has little chance of passing in the present Congress, but the president’s support plunges the nation “into the next front in the national battle over LGBT rights.”
