Upping the ante in a mortgage foreclosure mess that already reportedly has prompted the attorney general’s office in six or more states to initiate probes of various lenders, an Ohio official has asked a federal prosecutor to take a look at Chase Home Mortgage and a company that was created to keep track of mortgage loan ownership.

The referred Ohio matter concerns Chase Home Mortgage and Mortgage Electronic Registration Systems Inc., reports a brief Associated Press article.

In letters to U.S. Attorney Steven Dettelbach of Cleveland in August and September, the Ohio secretary of state, Jennifer Brunner, said affidavits in foreclosure cases had not been verified, had been improperly completed by notaries and had been notarized in bulk.

A Chase spokesman declined to comment. The president and CEO of MERS said anyone involved in a foreclosure is expected to comply with federal and state law.
