An Ohio State University law professor was beaten by robbers wearing motorcycle helmets as he was walking home in Bexley late Monday night.

ABC6OnYourSide.com identifies the professor as John Powell. His name is lower-case on the Ohio State University website. Powell is an authority in the area of civil rights and civil liberties who formerly worked as a consultant to the governments of Mozambique and South Africa. He also formerly served as national legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union.

Powell told police he was walking home around 11:30 p.m. when two men jumped out of a sport utility vehicle. The attackers beat him and dug through his pockets, and one fired a gun into the air. Powell said he could not identify the men because they were wearing motorcycle helmets.

Police recovered money and personal items stolen by the men not far from the site of the attack, the ABC story says.
