Ryan VanOver intended to go to law school until his musical career took over his life.

After graduating from college and some twists and turns, he wound up opening for Kid Rock and signing with Atlantic Records under his southern rock and country music moniker of Ty Stone, the Associated Press reports.

“The experience was every dream and fantasy of mine come true—including that I was able to touch many lives through my music and my story,” he said.

Now, however, his focus has changed again. He is a student at the University of Detroit’s Mercy School of Law. In a few months, he is looking forward to working as a summer associate at Dykema Gossett.

Excited about the new direction in his life, VanOver says he was able to take the difficulties of law school in stride after living on the road as a professional musician, a life he describes as “brutal and exhausting most of the time.

“Law school is similarly difficult and exhausting,” he continued, “but I’ve never worked harder than when on tour.”
