A prominent lawyer has been disbarred by consent, after pleading no contest in 2014 to a misdemeanor indecent assault charge concerning a paralegal who worked at a law firm he operated.

The disbarment of Robert Kerns, 68, retroactive to last February, when he was temporarily suspended, was announced Tuesday by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, according to Montgomery Media and the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Kerns acknowledged in a Jan. 18 resignation document that he consented to disbarment “because he knows that he could not successfully defend himself against the charges of professional misconduct as a result of the … plea of no contest.”

His lawyer, Brian McMonagle, did not respond to a Tuesday request for comment by the Inquirer.
