A California woman tracked down and arrested there last month for escaping from a Michigan prison 37 years earlier has been released.

Judy Lynn Hayman, 60, had already turned herself in and been sentenced in 1982 to time served in the Michigan attempted larceny case, her lawyer, Lisa Damiani, told a California judge on Friday.

Deputy District Attorney Richard Madruga said Hayman’s fugitive status also was based on a 1976 case; however, the file for that case could not be found. Madruga asked San Diego Superior Court Judge Michael Smyth to release Hayman from prison and the judge set her free, according to the Associated Press and the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Hayman is now known by another name, having legally changed her name in 1983. At the time of her 1977 escape from an Ypsilanti prison, she was serving an 18- to 24-month sentence for attempting to shoplift from a Detroit-area store.
