Parole officers found the body of former Las Vegas prosecutor David Schubert in his garage on Wednesday after the parolee missed a check-in last week.

Schubert, 49, was a former Clark County deputy district attorney who prosecuted Paris Hilton and Bruno Mars, report the Associated Press, the Las Vegas Sun, the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Fox 5 Vegas and My News 3. He resigned after his arrest in 2011 for possession of a $40 rock of crack cocaine. He fled to Mexico but returned to serve five months in prison. He was released in late April.

He had previously told News 3 that he thought the judge was making an example of him, and he had told the Review-Journal he felt he was unfairly treated.

Schubert’s lawyer and friend, Lou Schneider, told AP that Schubert’s body was found in a truck in his home’s garage with the windows rolled down. (AP identifies the friend as Lou Schneier, but other stories and online references say his name is Schneider.) A note was found near the body, but its contents weren’t immediately known, the Review-Journal says. My News 3 and Fox 5 Vegas were calling Schubert’s death an apparent suicide.

“I saw warning signs,” Schneider told AP. “Dave was extremely angry and despondent over the way he was being treated. It cost him his dignity, his law license, and finally, his life.”
