Inspired by his own extensive work travel, a Perkins Coie patent partner in San Diego has published a debut novel about an air marshal who is ambushed while protecting a teen pop star.

The novel, Takeoff, by lawyer Joseph Reid is a “wild success” that has attracted a worldwide fan base, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. The book is part of the Amazon First Reads series and it achieved the top spot in the category for war and military fiction after its publication during the summer.

According to an Amazon description, the book follows air marshal Seth Walker after his routine flight with pop star Max Magic ends with a hail of gunfire at the airport. Walker goes on the run with the teen as they try to stay ahead of their pursuers.

Though Takeoff is the first published novel for Reid, it’s not the first book he wrote. He was unable to find a publisher for his first two novels over a six-year period of rejections. He tells the Union-Tribune that he does his fiction writing between 4 a.m. to 8 a.m.

Reid is also skilled at writing briefs that capture courts’ attention, according to his online bio for Perkins Coie. Federal judges have praised his work as among the best they have read, the bio says.

Reid recently sent his publisher a follow-up book and is planning a Takeoff series.

“It’s been a unique opportunity,” Reid tells the Union-Tribune. “My day job is pretty consuming and balancing both can be tricky. I like my firm and what I do a lot, but we’ll see where it goes. I’ve only been out for a month, so I’m not making any long-term plans just yet.”
