Deputies at a Kentucky jail have turned away patients hoping to keep their appointments with a psychiatrist accused of stabbing a patient who was also his lover.

Scott Colvin, chief deputy of the Kenton County jail, told the Kentucky Enquirer that patients wanted to keep their appointments with jailed psychiatrist Douglas Rank, and some asked if Rank could write them a prescription.

“Obviously, it was denied by me,” Colvin told the publication. “You can’t practice your trade while in jail. He is no different than a plumber or watchmaker.”

Rank has no prior criminal record, although his license to practice medicine was restricted in 2001 over a finding he prescribed high doses of narcotic prescriptions, the story says. He also faced disciplinary action in 2000 after admitting he had sex with another patient, according to the publication.
