A Pentagon report concludes that the treatment of detainees at Guantanamo Bay meets the requirements of the Geneva Conventions, but conditions could be improved by allowing more social interaction and time for religious observances.

President Obama requested the report on his second day in office, the New York Times reports. The report by Adm. Patrick Walsh addressed the controversy of forced feeding of prisoners on hunger strikes; he found that the practice conformed with a mandate in the Geneva Conventions to preserve the lives of prisoners, the Washington Post reports.

David Remes, a former Covington & Burling lawyer who represents a hunger striker, told the Post that he views the forced feeding as torture. He said the tubes that are inserted in prisoners’ noses to deliver nourishment are too big, and no lubrication or anesthetic is used.

The Pentagon has denied Remes’ charges.
