Highlighting the importance of internal corporate investigations as a practice area for major law firms, Pepper Hamilton has announced plans to acquire the law firm of Louis Freeh, a former director of the FBI, as well as an investigative firm affiliated with the law firm.

Freeh and his law firm, Freeh Sporkin & Sullivan, which has offices in Delaware, New York and Washington, D.C., have been in the news lately because of their involvement in investigating what happened at Pennsylvania State University concerning a former assistant football coach who is now convicted in a high-profile child sex-abuse case.

Such scandals are big business for the law firm. Its website lists a dozen lawyers. Financial terms of the merger weren’t disclosed, according to the New York Times’ DealBook blog.

The law firm’s investigative arm, Freeh Group International Solutions, will become a subsidiary of Pepper Hamilton but continue to operate independently and keep its own name, the newspaper notes.

A law firm press release announcing the merger today provides additional details.
