Pepper Hamilton is opening a new Los Angeles office with the acquisition of a former practice leader from Dewey & LeBoeuf.

Gary Apfel, who is one of, at last report, over 85 partners to exit the struggling Dewey firm in 2012, served as co-chairman of the consumer financial services practice group at his now-former law firm. He advises clients on corporate governance and compliance matters, as well as other mergers and acquisitions, reorganizations, securities offerings and other commercial transactions, reports the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Philadelphia-based Pepper Hamilton has some 500 attorneys, but only a relatively minimal presence outside the northeastern United States. Of two offices outside that area, one is in Irvine, Calif., with a six-attorney roster, and the other is in suburban Detroit and has about 20 lawyers.
