A conservative Pepperdine University law professor who supported Barack Obama during the presidential campaign has a new job as ambassador to Malta.

Professor Douglas Kmiec won confirmation Aug. 7, the National Law Journal reports. The island nation off the coast of Sicily is a good fit for the professor, according to the story. The nation’s official religion is Catholicism, and Kmiec, an abortion opponent, is the former dean of Catholic University law school.

What are the last two sentences about? Do they imply that a Catholic is only fit to be an ambassador to countries which define Catholicism as their official religion - that Jewish diplomats are fit only to be diplomats to Israel - that Black Americans can only be fit as diplomats in Africa. It is an outrageous and utterly irrelevant comment.
