Widespread law firm layoffs have now spread to another well-known partnership, with news today that Perkins Coie is cutting 12 attorneys and 26 staff members.

The firm confirmed in a brief statement provided to Above the Law that it had made the layoffs this week. It will provided nine months of continuing health coverage to those let go.

"While these actions are painful to all concerned, the firm concluded that such actions were a necessary response to the current, challenging economy," the statement explains.

From ABAJ post, 1/29/09:  “Next week, Perkins Coie will begin construction on roughly 20,000 additional square feet at its Chicago office. The new space will eventually house 20 to 25 new attorneys, plus support staff, as part a strategic plan to broaden the firm’s national footprint, according to Chris Wilson, managing partner of Perkins Coie’s Chicago office. Wilson said the firm will target lateral hires in patent litigation, bankruptcy and insolvency, and environmental practices.”
