Corrected: An Arkansas man who made the mistake of opening the door to his home when someone knocked in the wee hours yesterday was rescued by his pet parrot.

As the two unknown men beat Jack Dukes and demanded hydrocodone pills, one raised his voice and grabbed for the bird, reports KSFM, based on Dukes’ account. That apparently was the last straw for Dukes’ pet macaw, Charlie.

“He went to screaming,” says Dukes of one perpetrator, “and the bird went to screaming.” Charlie bit him, taking a chunk out of the man’s arm, his owner says, which persuaded the two men to depart.

Authorities are looking for them but at last report hadn’t arrested any suspects.

A televised report linked to the article notes that a reward is being offered.
