Pfizer has announced that general counsel Amy Schulman is leaving the company, without giving a reason for the departure.

The “sudden announcement” of the “surprise split” came in a press release, Corporate Counsel reports. Schulman had been slated to become president of a new Pfizer division on Jan. 1, but she will not be taking that job, the press release says. Bloomberg News also has a story.

“Amy Schulman and Pfizer have agreed to separate,” the statement said.

Schulman will be replaced immediately as general counsel by Douglas Lankler, chief compliance and risk officer, who was initially named to take the job in January.

Schulman had been general counsel for five years. She had pushed to pay flat fees to outside law firms and had hired 3Ls in an effort to train “a generation of lawyers who know how to respond to what clients need.”
