Plan to merge Rutgers' two law schools would end competition for students, faculties
Officials at Rutgers in New Jersey have announced a plan to merge the university’s two law schools at Camden and Newark.
The merger, which would take place by the fall of 2014, would create one of the country’s largest law schools. Neither campus would be closed, but the schools would no longer be competing for students and faculty amid a nationwide enrollment decline, report the New Jersey Star-Ledger and the Philadelphia Inquirer.
John Farmer Jr., dean of the Rutgers law school at Newark, spoke with both publications about the proposal. “Does it really make sense for us to be competing against each other?” he asked the Star Ledger.
Pooling resources—by merging library collections, for example—could also save money, leading to lower tuition or increased scholarship funding, Farmer told the Inquirer.
