Police in California are using Facebook to get new leads in an unsolved 1968 murder in which the victim was never identified.

Police in Huntington Beach posted photos from a purse found about a quarter mile away from the crime scene along with a composite sketch of the victim, according to the Orange County Register and the Los Angeles Times blog L.A. Now.

Based on the feedback, police now know there is no connection between the purse and the victim, the stories say. But police do have some “workable clues” in the case, police spokesman Russell Reinhart told L.A. Now.

After posting the item, the police department received more than 50 phone calls, dozens of e-mails and tweets, and 16 comments on the Facebook page, L.A. Now says. Reinhart told the blog that police will continue to use Facebook and other social media in the future.
