Pop singer Ricky Martin attended a public investiture ceremony for Justice Sonia Sotomayor yesterday, but a U.S. Supreme Court spokeswoman didn’t know the reason why.

Sotomayor wore a judicial robe adorned with a lace collar that was a gift from Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, according to the Washington Post and Reuters’ Front Row Washington blog. A Supreme Court spokeswoman had no details on why the Puerto Rican-born Martin was on the guest list, according to the Reuters account and the New York Times.

“But Mr. Martin did not really rate in the singular world of Washington celebrity,” the Times says. “Spectators instead pointed excitedly at Sen. Patrick J. Leahy, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.”

President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden attended, along with the eight other members of the Supreme Court, the National Law Journal reports. Also on hand were the attorney general and the solicitor general, and several of their predecessors.
