The so-called preppy killer, now accused of selling cocaine from his New York apartment, told a judge yesterday that he could not afford a lawyer.

Robert Chambers Jr. served 15 years in prison for killing a woman in Central Park during what he said was rough sex. He was arrested Monday after a sting operation by undercover police who say they paid almost $10,000 to buy cocaine from him over the summer, the New York Times reports.

Chambers finds himself in different circumstances that when he was tried for the killing of 18-year-old Jennifer Levin 20 years ago, the Times story says. He was portrayed then as coming from a prep school background with connections and privileges. But since he has been released from prison he has had trouble finding work and had to return to prison for 100 days after trace amounts of heroin were found in his car.
