Starting this week, digital audio files of select court proceedings are going to be made available to the public over the Internet, under a pilot project that may eventually pave the way for doing so as a widespread practice.

The audio files will be available through the PACER (Public Access to Court Electronic Records) subscription service that offers members access to printed court records for a relatively minimal fee, according to a U.S. Courts press release.

Initially, two federal courts are participating in the pilot project: the U.S. District Court in Nebraska, and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina. Three others are expected to join the project later this summer: the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Alabama, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Maine and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
