Someone has obviously been trying to kill the wife of prominent Houston personal injury lawyer Jeffrey Stern, but Stern isn’t behind the plot, according to his attorney.

Yvonne Marie Stern was shot in the abdomen May 5 in what was at least the third shooting attempt, the Houston Chronicle reports. Her divorce lawyer, Bobby Newman, told the Houston Chronicle in a separate story that the woman now charged with soliciting Stern’s murder, Michelle Cabrera Gaiser, was having an affair with Jeffrey Stern.

Jeffrey Stern’s lawyer, Paul Nugent, confirmed the affair, but said Stern knew nothing of a murder plot. “Jeffrey Stern loves his wife and his family,” Nugent told the Chronicle. “He was shocked to learn Ms. Gaiser was trying to kill his wife.”

Jeffrey Stern, 53, was arrested with his lover and charged with unlawfully carrying a weapon. Nugent says Stern was carrying a gun to protect his wife and children, and has a permit, although he didn’t have it at the time of his arrest.

In the first of two prior incidents, someone drove past the Sterns’ $1 million Bellaire home on Feb. 10 and opened fire. In the second, on April 15, someone rang the Sterns’ doorbell and began firing through the door.

A source told MyFoxHouston that Gaiser, a law firm office manager, used to work at Jeffrey Stern’s firm, identified as Stern, Miller & Higdon, according to the Bellaire Examiner.
