The legal community in the Bahamas is shaken by the death of a prominent lawyer who was shot multiple times outside his law office Saturday.

Dennis Gomez, whose age is variously given as 57 or 59, seemingly may have been the victim of a robbery gone bad, although authorities are still investigating the crime, according to the Tribune.

Gomez was the husband of an acting magistrate and the brother of the comptroller of customs. His law firm website says he specialized in civil litigation and divorces.

The Bahamas Press says he was leaving his Nassau office on East Bay Street when he was shot once in the head and five times in the chest by a lone gunman.

“Crime and the fear thereof is leaving a lasting impression on the country,” says an unidentified former associate of Gomez in an earlier Bahamas Press article.

“We are all shocked by this heinous act and call on the powers that be to mobilize all its resources of the state to squash period of blatant horror that has gripped our nation.”
