A prominent attorney criticized earlier, along with others responsible for a wrongful conviction case in Missouri, is in the spotlight again.

A Missouri Supreme Court petition filed on behalf of a man convicted of murdering his mother accuses attorney Kenny Hulshof, a former six-term Congressman and state Republican gubernatorial candidate, of withholding evidence from the defense and knowingly presenting false testimony at the 1996 trial of Dale Helmig, according to the Associated Press and the Columbia Daily Tribune.

The petition also questions the competency of Helmig’s defense counsel. It seeks DNA tests and a new trial for Helmig.

Hulshof, who handled the Helmig case as a special prosecutor, could not be reached for comment by either the AP or the newspaper. However, he has said in the past that he did nothing wrong in the Helmig case and fulfilled his duties as a prosecutor in winning the conviction.
