A prominent Utah defense attorney was stabbed in the vicinity of his home on Thursday morning, which is not far from his law office.

Steven B. Killpack, 63, survived, and authorities are hoping he will be able to tell them more about what happened. He walked about half a block, seeking help from neighbors, before collapsing, according to the Deseret News, KSL, the Salt Lake Tribune and ABC 4 News.

Neighbors pointed out to responding officers that another man at the scene was bloody, too, and that individual is being detained for questioning. Killpack is reportedly in stable condition after surgery.

He returned to private practice last year after heading the federal public defender’s office in Utah for a decade. He also served as Utah County attorney and was in charge of the Utah County Public Defender’s Association before he took the federal defender job.
