Prosecutors drop charges against activists who made undercover Planned Parenthood videos
Prosecutors in Texas have dropped the remaining charges against two anti-abortion activists who made undercover videos of Planned Parenthood officials in an attempt to show the group illegally sells fetal tissue.
The Harris County District Attorney’s office on Tuesday dropped charges accusing David Robert Daleiden and Sandra Merritt of using fake driver’s licenses to gain access to Planned Parenthood in Houston, report the Houston Chronicle, CBS News and the Texas Tribune.
Judge Brock Thomas dismissed charges of tampering with a governmental record after the DA requested it. The Houston Chronicle calls the DA’s decision “a surprise move.”
The grand jury that had indicted Daleiden and Merritt was asked to investigate Planned Parenthood. Grand jurors cleared the group of any wrongdoing, prosecutors said in January. Lawyers for the activists had claimed the indictments were the result of a “runaway grand jury.”
