Prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty against James Holmes, the suspect in the shooting deaths of 12 people at a Colorado movie theater.

Lawyers for Holmes had said their client is willing to plead guilty in exchange for a sentence of life in prison without parole. But Arapahoe County District Attorney George Brauchle rejected the offer in a court hearing today, report the New York Times, CNN and the Denver Post.

“In this case, for James Eagan Holmes, justice is death,” Brauchle said. The prosecutor said he had spoken with victims’ families before reaching the decision.

In a court filing last week, prosecutors said the plea offer by the defense was “for the intended purpose of generating predictable publicity.”
