A lawyer was shot and killed in an Oklahoma City parking lot on Tuesday by her ex-husband, who then killed himself.

The Oklahoma City lawyer, 58-year-old Freda Cross, had obtained a protective order against her former spouse, Michael McCreary, NewsOK.com reports. The shooting occurred only hours after McCreary was released from jail where he had been held on separate complaints of public intoxication and driving under the influence.

Cross had filed for divorce in October after 10 years of marriage, and it was granted in January, the story says. Cross obtained the protective order on March 10, and McCreary turned over his gun to his lawyer, Dan Murdock. The lawyer told NewsOK.com that he doesn’t know where his client obtained another gun.

“I know the divorce came about as a result of the alcohol abuse,” Murdock told the publication. “I think Mike accepted that he had a problem, but it was uncontrollable and he just couldn’t or wouldn’t do anything about it.”
