Quarles & Brady is planning continued expansion in its Chicago and Tampa, Fla., offices, and will open a new office in an undisclosed Midwest location, the new chair of the Milwaukee-based law firm tells the Business Journal.

When efforts to find a merger partner in Chicago didn’t work out, Quarles went ahead and hired a few attorneys at a time laterally, said Kimberly Leach Johnson, who took office on Monday as the firm’s first female chair. There are now 84 lawyers on the attorney roster in Chicago, up from “40-something” five years ago, and 22 lawyers in Tampa, which opened with six less than four years ago.
